What is PreViser?

PreViser is the first evidence-based online risk prediction system for common oral diseases, specifically periodontitis, caries and oral cancer.
Effective Prevention Saves Money and Reduces Oral Disease Experience
Evidence from the classical studies of Axelsson et al in Sweden demonstrated unequivocally that periodontitis and caries are largely preventable provided high risk patients are identified before these diseases become established. To do this, it is vital to have objective, clinically validated information that enables the implementation of focused and individualised preventive care programs for patients.
Importance of Objective Risk Prediction
Evidence from Persson et al. demonstrated that irrespective of the knowledge, training and experience of individual practitioners, clinicians vary widely in their allocation of risk scores to identical clinical and radiological data. The conclusion was that the assessment of risk by subjective judgment appears to be too variable and inaccurate to be useful in clinical decision making.
Importance of Personalised Biofeedback
Barnfather et al (2005) also highlighted the effectiveness of immediate, individualised biofeedback to patients in the primary dental care setting to stimulate behaviour changes directed at improving oral health.
How does PreViser Work?
PreViser is an online validated risk prediction system which provides objective, reproducible scores that are simple to generate and which provide visual biofeedback to help motivate patients to take responsibility for their own oral health. Key features are:
- Immediate biofeedback of individualised risk and disease scores from an online calculator
- A highly visual and motivational patient education system to engage patients in self management
- The ability to perform repeat analyses so patients and practitioners can track changes in risk and disease status in a simple, visual format
- An objective oral healthcare recording system which provides patient and practitioner printouts to reduce the risk of medico legal challenge
- A system that enables practitioners to map the risk and disease profile of their practice and therefore identify those patients requiring the most support and therefore resource
Patient Motivation is the Key to Prevention
Highly motivated patients achieve better treatment outcomes, but in order to achieve this motivation, the following are important:
- Patients must appreciate that they are different to the majority of the population due to their increased risk level for a given disease;
- Patients must understand why they have the disease, what causes it, how it progresses and what the outcome will be
- Patients need to know their role in managing the disease and they need evidence that their efforts are improving things
- Patients need to experience improvements in quality of life resulting from their increased level of oral health
- Patients also need to understand that in the medium to long term they will reduce considerably the costs of their own healthcare by embracing preventive strategies.
